What is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan, also called CDCP, is a federal dental benefit for eligible Canadian residents who do not have access to private dental insurance. It helps pay a portion of the cost for a wide range of oral health services, but coverage levels, co-payments, and preauthorization requirements can vary depending on the patient’s situation and the treatment involved.

Who may qualify for Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan may be available to eligible Canadian residents who do not have access to dental insurance and meet the program’s income and tax-filing requirements. In general, patients must be Canadian residents for tax purposes, must have filed their tax return for the previous year, and must have an adjusted family net income of less than $90,000.
Another important requirement is that you must not have access to dental insurance. This can include coverage through your own job, a family member’s job, pension benefits, or certain other group or private plans, even if you are not currently using that coverage.

What dental services may be covered under CDCP?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan may help pay a portion of the cost of many common dental services for eligible patients. Covered services can include dental exams, X-rays, teeth cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, fillings, root canal treatment, gum care, tooth extractions, and certain denture services.
Some services may be covered without preauthorization, while others may require approval in advance through the CDCP process. More complex treatments such as certain major restorative services, some dentures, crowns, and deep sedation or general anesthesia may require preauthorization depending on the treatment and the patient’s approved coverage.
Coverage is not the same as full payment in every case. The CDCP helps cover eligible services according to program rules and fee limits, so patients may still have co-payments or out-of-pocket costs depending on the treatment provided and their coverage level.
